Prostate cancer radiotherapy equipment. Lead-lined box being used to hold the long hollow needles loaded with radioactive sources, in the positions planned for effective irradiation of the prostate of a patient with prostate cancer. An ultrasound probe and a template grid equivalent to the one seen here, are used to guide the needles through the perineal skin to the prostate gland, to implant the radioactive sources. This is known as brachytherapy, and is a form of radiotherapy. The radiation kills the cancerous cells.
