Caption

Prostate cancer radiotherapy surgery. Patient under general anaesthetic with a fluoroscope (centre) lined up to check the correct positioning of radioactive implants in his cancerous prostate gland. The treatment process has involved the use of a trans-rectal ultrasound probe and a template grid (neither seen) to guide long hollow needles with the radioactive sources through the perineal skin to the prostate gland. This is known as brachytherapy, and is a form of radiotherapy. The radiation kills the cancerous cells.
