Comet Holmes. This image was taken six days after an outburst increased the comet's diameter to over 1.4 million kilometres. The comet's nucleus is the bright white spot at upper right, the rest of the frame is the shell, or coma, of the comet, which consists of fine dust particles. Comet Holmes is a short-period comet, with an orbit of only 6.9 years. Image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope on 29 October 2007.
