Comet Holmes. This image was taken eleven days after an outburst increased the comet's diameter to over 1.4 million kilometres. The comet's nucleus is the bright white spot at centre. It is surrounded by the shell, or coma, of the comet, which consists of fine dust particles. Comet Holmes is a short-period comet, with an orbit of only 6.9 years. Image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope on 4 November 2007.
