Caption

This deep water squid, Enoploteuthis chuni, has its ventral surface covered with photophores that produce light (bioluminescence). The color on the bottom side of the squid blends in with the lighter color of the ocean surface above it. This method of hiding a silhouette from predators below is called counter-illumination. This individual was trawled between 200 meters depth and the surface by a commercial fishing trawler in the Sea of Japan (2007).
