Leg with necrotizing fasciitis. Close-up of leg of a 67-year-old man who has necrotising fasciitis. Also known as flesh-eating disease, this is a rare bacterial infection of the subcutaneous tissue. The infection progresses quickly, causing blistering of the skin and necrosis (death) of the subcutaneous tissue. Treatment is with surgery to remove infected tissue, and antibiotics and skin grafts, although mortality rates are high.
