Podocytes in a kidney's glomerulus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through healthy human kidney tissue, showing a close-up of podocytes in one of the kidney's glomeruli. A glomerulus is a ball-shaped network of capillaries in the nephron of a kidney. It aids in the formation of urine by filtering the blood. Podocytes have foot processes (pedicels) that wrap around the capillaries. These pedicels interlock with pedicels of adjacent podocytes, forming the kidney's blood filtration mechanism. Magnification: x8000, when printed 15 centimetres wide.
