Proteus mirabilis bacteria, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Proteus mirabilis is a Gram-negative, rod-shaped (bacillus) intestinal bacterium that is common in the colon and does not necessarily cause disease. In immunocompromised individuals it can lead to cystitis, urinary tract infections, wound infections, pneumonia or sepsis. Magnification: x25,000, when printed 15cm wide.
