Colony of Emperor Penguins, Aptenodytes forsteri, on fast ice adjacent to Snow Hill Island in the Weddell Sea, Antarctica, October, 2007. Chicks are 50-90 days of age and are still fed by parents. Ice shelf is seasonal and will break up in December, when chicks must go to sea and feed themselves. Cliffs the in distance are the coastline of Snow Hill Island.
