Agave americana, Century Plant, along the coast of the Ligurian Sea, Italy. Agave americana is native to the new world tropics but it was introduced into Europe in the 16th century. The Century Plant blooms once in its lifetime and then dies, leaving a tall wooden seed stalk. The plant is called the century plant because of this 'once a century' blooming, but it actually lives approximately 25 years.
