Moss (Division Bryophyta) are primitive plants that are less well adapted to obtaining and retaining water than more advanced plants. Consequently, they are found in moist places. In the northern hemisphere they are often found on the north but not south sides of rocks and trees because the northern side is not dried out by the sun, which tracks across the sky more to the south.
