Motorcycle disc brake. The outer tyre has been removed, revealing this metal disc that surrounds the hub. The brake pads (black, upper right) fit either side of the disc and are forced together to slow and stop the disc and wheel by applying friction. This is done using mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic forces. The metal rod at centre is part of the motorcycle fork, holding the wheel in place and connecting it to the rest of the vehicle.
