Caption

Air plants, or epiphytes, have adapted to the crowded conditions of hardwood hammocks in Everglades National Park, Florida, by growing on other plants. Since water conservation is particularly important for air plants, some have leaves shaped in such a way that they hold rainwater in vase-like reservoirs at their bases.
