A starving male mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) eating low nutrition ponderosa pine needles due to deep winter snows that covered other food vegetation in Colorado. Their name comes from their mule like ears and they developed from hybridization of White-tailed Deer and primitive Black-tailed Deer.
