Light micrograph of a wilted iris petal. In the cells of a fresh petal the cytoplasm (artificially stained purple) fills each of the cells, but as the petal begins to wilt, water is lost and the cytoplasm retracts away from the cell wall into the centre of each cell, as seen here. Photo number B060/024 shows a fresh petal from the same flower. The many tiny particles visible in the cytoplasm are cell organelles known as plastids which produce the petal colour. Magnification: x150 at 35mm size.
