Centre of Milky Way galaxy. Radio image from the Very Large Array (VLA) of a spiral of ionised gas orbiting the supermassive black hole at the centre of the Milky Way galaxy. The Milky Way's galactic centre is around 26,000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Sagittarius. These observations, in band-C radio waves, date from 1982.
