He rapidly became friends with the leading members of society and was appointed to attend the Princess of Wales as physician. He made many travels during his life and wrote about them with considerable skill. He was consultant physician to six prime ministers, was appointed Physician Extraordinary to Queen Victoria in 1837 and Physician in Ordinary to the Prince Consort in 1840. In 1853 he was created a baronet, and served as president of the Royal Institution.
