The two flagellae, used in locomotion, is a branched projection at top. The large oval is the cell nucleus with the nucleolus appearing as a black spot. The black lines around the edges of the algae are chloroplasts. Unlike plants, algal chloroplasts are not bound into discrete units by a membraneWhite regions in the chloroplasts are starch grains, a product of photosynthesis.
