False-colour scanning electron micrograph of details of the surface of a tobacco leaf protoplast which has begun to remake its cell wall after 10 hours of culturing. The crisscross pattern of fibres corresponds to cellulose microfibrils which cover the plasma membrane (visible beneath). The spherical shapes are either membrane blebs or an artifact.
