Turgid cell. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a resting plant cell which is turgid due to a full vacuole. The cell's vacuole (coloured blue here) is a membrane bound cavity filled with cell sap, consisting mainly of water with dissolved sugars, salts and chemicals. Around the vacuole, the cell's organelles are seen enclosed by the cell wall (brown). Under normal conditions, the vacuoles of each cell serve to support the plant. Full vacuoles act as "balloons" exerting pressure against the cell wall (termed turgid) and stopping the plant from wilting. If the plant is subject to "stress", it may release water & become flaccid (seen in image B095/002).
