Robert Newall (1812-1889), Scottish engineer and astronomer, with his 25 inch refracting telescope. The telescope was the largest in the world when it was erected in 1870. It was kept at his private observatory at Ferndene, Gateshead, UK. Image taken from Nature 17 February 1870.
