The wires that make up the drift chamber of the Mark II particle detector are seen during its construction at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in California. Drift chambers consist of layers of parallel wires held in a gas-filled framework. Charged subatomic particles traversing the chamber ionise the gas along their paths, & the electrons released in the ionisation then 'drift' towards so- called 'sense' wires. Exact measurement of the 'drift time', coupled with the knowledge of which sense wires are hit, enable physicists to calculate the tracks of the particles to within 50 millionths of a metre.
