Starch grains. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of starch grains (orange) in a black-eyed pea (Vigna sp.). Starch is synthesised from sucrose, a sugar produced by the plant during photosynthesis, and used as a source of energy. It is stored as grains in structures called amyloplasts. Magnification: x500 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
