Starch grains. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of starch grains (blue) in the seed of a legume (bean). Starch is synthesised from sucrose, a sugar produced by the plant during photosynthesis, and used as a source of energy. It is stored as grains in structures called amyloplasts (orange). Magnification: x800 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
