Transmission electron micrograph of an amyloplast, a starch-containing plastid, found in a cell from the root cap of an onion, Allium cepa. Amyloplasts contain large quantities of starch (white globules). In the root cap these plastids act as statoliths by sinking to the bottom of the cell, thereby indicating to the root the downward direction of growth. Magnification X75,000 (at 10x8 size), X10,700 (at 35mm size).
