Starch grains. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of starch grains (grey) in the stem of a bamboo plant (family Gramineae). Starch is synthesised from sucrose, a sugar produced by the plant during photosynthesis, and used as a source of energy. It is stored as grains in structures called amyloplasts (green). Magnification: x700 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
