Christoph Scheiner's sunspot observations. Historical artwork showing the solar observations made by Christoph Scheiner (1573-1650) in 1611. Sunspots are areas of intense magnetic activity on the solar surface. This engraving of various sunspots seen on the solar disc is from Scheiner's book Rosa Ursina sive Sol, which he published in Rome in 1630.
