False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of stacks of grana, seen edge-on, in a chloroplast from a leaf of the spotted laurel, Aucuba japonica. The grana in chloroplasts are the sites of photosynthesis in higher plants; they bear the light-receptive green pigment chlorophyll. Chlorophyll contains the enzymes that convert carbon dioxide & water into useful chemical energy in the presence of sunlight. In this high- magnification SEM, the granular appearance of the grana is due to the drying & fracturing technique used to prepare the specimen. Magnification: x14,300 at 35mm size. Green tint ("leech"). Original is BW B110/025. Reference: MICROCOSMOS, figure 6.14, page 117.
