Non-viable fertilised chicken egg. Egg being checked for fertilisation using a technique known as candling. Candling reveals the contents of the egg by shining a bright light through the translucent eggshell. Eggs that have been fertilised, but in which the embryo has stopped growing, as here, exhibit a characteristic thin blood ring (thin dark line) encircling the yolk.
