Transmission electron micrograph of a section through the unicellular green algae, Chlamydomonas asymmetrica, showing the arrangement of chloroplasts (dark-stained bodies) around the cell. Chloroplasts are the sites of photosynthesis in higher plants & green algae. They contain light-sensitive chlorophyll pigments, which react to produce sugar from carbon dioxide. Sugar can be stored in the chloroplast as starch (white bodies). Algal chloroplasts often contain a body called a pyrenoid, seen as the dark mass at the centre of the large area of starch.
