Abscess on the forearm of an 86-year-old woman. An abscess is a painful pus-filled swelling caused by a bacterial infection. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs and, if needed, surgical drainage of the pus. This abscess developed from a splinter that lodged in the skin during gardening.
