Transmission electron micrograph of a dividing chloroplast in a pea leaf, Pisum sativum, showing the central constriction which narrows inwards to divide the cell in two. Chloroplasts are the sites of photosynthesis in plants & green algae. This process involves the stimulation of chlorophyll pigments by light, which leads to the formation of sugar from carbon dioxide. Some sugar is stored in the chloroplast as starch (white oval), while the rest is exported around the plant as food. The black threads seen here are grana, stacks of interconnected membranes, along which the chlorophyll pigments are stored. Magnification X40,000 (at 8x10" size), X5715 (at 35mm size).
