Meiosis. Light micrograph of bluebell (Endymion sp.) anther cells in meiosis. Meiosis (at upper right) is a reduction division of the cell nucleus to produce cells with just one set of chromosomes. The first stages of division are not seen here. Prophase I is the visible condensing and pairing of chromosomes. Metaphase I is the attachment of the chromosomes to a mid-line spindle. Most of the cells here are at Anaphase I with chromosomes at the spindle poles. The cell divides and the nuclear membrane reforms (Telophase I). These stages are repeated (Prophase II-Telophase II) to produce 4 haploid cells. At centre is a cell at Telophase II. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size.
