False colour transmission electron micrograph of a dividing cell (mitosis) in the root tip of maize, Zea mays. The micrograph shows the chromosomes (red) lined up in the middle of the mitotic spindle area at the phase of mitosis known as metaphase. This is when the chromosomes come to rest in a line at the midpoint of the mitotic spindle before separating & travelling to the opposite poles of the spindle. The spindle area also contains proplastids (yellow) with starch grains in some (pale green) & fat droplets (brownish). The vaculoes (dark green) are excluded from the spindle area. Magnification: x1140 at 35mm size, x2,000 at 6x4.5 size.
