Prophase in root cells. Light micrograph of the prophase stage of mitosis (cell division) in cells of the hyacinth root, Hyacinthus sp. Cell nuclei are yellow; cell contents are blue. The nuclei of the two cells seen here are well defined, and chromosomes are vaguely visible. Prophase is the first stage in mitosis in which the nucleus prepares for division, and a spindle of microtubules assembles in the cytoplasm (not seen). These microtubules will assist in transporting the nuclear material in later stages of cell division. This image is one of a series of five illustrating the process of mitosis in the hyacinth root (see: B215/039, B215/041, B215/042, B215/043).
