Animation of the sporozoite stage of the life cycle of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium sp. The sporozoite stage develops in the salivary glands of a mosquito, and is passed into the bloodstream when the mosquito bites a human. The sporozoites migrate to the liver, where they infect liver cells and replicate themselves, before emerging back into the blood to infect red blood cells. The infection of red blood cells causes the symptoms of malaria.
