Animation of a Salmonella sp. Bacterium. Salmonella is a Gram-negative, motile, rod-shaped bacterium, bearing numerous long flagella, which it beats for propulsion. Salmonella bacteria are intracellular pathogens, and a common cause of food poisoning after eating contaminated meat and eggs. Some types, such as S. Typhi, can cause typhoid fever, which can be fatal.
