Caption

Animation of malaria merozoites bursting from a red blood cell. Merozoites are a stage in the life cycle of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium sp. The merozoites emerge from liver cells and infect red blood cells, replicating within them and bursting out to infect more red blood cells. It is this destructive process that causes the symptoms of malaria.
