Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Light micrograph of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, bacteria responsible for gonorrhoeae. The sexually-transmitted disease occurs when colonies of the small, kidney-shaped bacterium infect the mucous membranes of the urethra; symptoms include pain on passing water & a discharge of pus (some infected women, however, experience no symptoms). Untreated, gonorrhoeae may cause sterility in women; severe inflammation of the penile urethra may prevent the passage of urine. Further complications include inflammation of heart valves (endocarditis), conjunctivitis of the eye, and arthritis. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification: x530 at 35mm size.
