Spirochaetes. Light micrograph of several spiral- shaped spirochaetes bacteria seen amongst a pool of unidentified rod-shaped bacteria. Spirochaetes are a family of spirally twisted unicellular bacteria that are widespread in aquatic environments and in the bodies of animals. Some can cause diseases, most notably, the syphilis causing Treponema pallidum. Magnification: x107 at 35mm size.
