Liver cyst. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a section through the liver of a patient, showing a large cyst (dark, top left). Cysts are abnormal closed sacs within tissue that usually contain fluid. Small cysts usually don't pose a problem. Large cysts, however, may need to be surgically removed or drained if they cause pain of disrupt the functioning of the tissue or organ in which they are found.
