Caption

Animation of the formation of the Solar System, showing an early gas giant planet accreting gas and dust from the primordial nebula from which it formed. The growing planet has partially cleared its orbit through the dust by sweeping up the material within. As it grows, its gravitational pull gets stronger, and it accretes more material. It is thought that the gas giant planets Jupiter and Saturn formed in this way.
