Nikolai Przhevalsky (1839-1888), Russian explorer, geographer and student of Central Asia. Przhevalsky, from a noble Polish family, travelled widely across Central Asia in four expeditions in the years 1870 to 1885. He journeyed across the Gobi Desert to Peking, travelled in the Tian Shan mountains and Western China, and attempted to reach Lhasa in Tibet. He described a species of wild horse and a gazelle, both of which were named after him. He died from typhus at the age of 49 while planning a fifth journey.
