Atomic Lake, Soviet nuclear test site. This lake, in Kazakhstan near the Semipalatinsk nuclear testing site, was formed in 1965 after a 20-kiloton 'civilian' nuclear device exploded at a depth of 80 metres. This was a test to see if it was possible to construct large canals and waterways using nuclear blasts. Many years later, the dosimeter (seen here) shows that radiation still persists in the lake's vicinity. Photographed in 1991.
