Search for Nobile's polar expedition. Soviet icebreaker Krasin in Arctic waters in June 1928. The ship unloaded a plane that found the stranded survivors of a polar expedition led by the Italian engineer and explorer Umberto Nobile. Nobile's crew of sixteen, on board the airship Italia, flew over the North Pole, but while still in the Arctic crashed on 25 May. An international rescue effort was launched, but several rescuers, including Roald Amundsen, died in the attempt. The pilot of the plane, reported the position of the survivors, but then was forced to make an emergency landing. By 15 July, the Krasin had rescued both the survivors and the pilot.
