Andrei Sakharov's return from exile. Crowd of journalists and photographers surrounding the Soviet physicist and human rights activist Andrei Sakharov (1921-1989) as he leaves a train on his return from a 7-year exile. This return, from Gorky (Nizhny Novgorod), took place on 23 December 1986, at the Yaroslavl railroad terminus, Moscow, Russia. Sakharov's concerns with the safety of nuclear tests led him to campaign for a nuclear test-ban and improved civil rights. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1975. He was sent into internal exile in 1980, and not released until 1986.
