False colour transmission electron micrograph of Proteus mirabilis, a rodshaped flagellate bacterium (gram negative). The bacterium moves by means of flagellum (pl. Proteus is commonly found in soil, water & the intestines of animals, including humans. Under certain conditions some species will cause intestinal irritation. They are rarely responsible for primary infections, but are found in association with more pathogenic bacteria in conditions such as cystitis, peritonitis & some forms of diarrhoea. Mag: X17,650 (at 35mm size).
