G. vaginalis is one of several species of bacterium associated with bacterial vaginosis (also known as anaerobic vaginosis or non-specific vaginitis). The infection is sexually transmitted and causes a watery, non-irritating vaginal discharge which has a characteristic fishy odour. Treatment is with metronizadole. Male partners are treated at the same time to avoid reinfection. Magnification: x32,750 at 6x4.5cm size.
