Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the surface of the small intestine. The surface consists of deep folds, called villi, which are covered in tiny hair-like projections known as microvilli (yellow). The villi and microvilli greatly increase the surface area available for absorption of nutrients from the intestine.
