Gecko scale hairs. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of hairs, or setae, on a scale on the skin of a gecko's (family Gekkonidae). While these hairs are not the same as those on its foot pads, which enable it to cling to smooth surfaces, the properties of these hairs are still being studied by scientists. Magnification: x4000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
